During their markup session on June 24, the DC Council Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety removed the proposed repeal of the Sanctuary Values Act from the FY26 budget. We thank the members of the Committee for recognizing that a legislative matter like this should be considered separately from the budget process.
For years, the conservative right has stoked fear of outsiders to keep communities divided and apart, and to maintain their own power and control. We must reject this everywhere it appears — including in a new proposal from Mayor Bowser as part of her proposed budget for FY 2026.
