Free DC is a movement led by the people of the District of Columbia to win dignity for our communities and exert our right to self-determination. For too long, the people of DC have been prevented from fully governing ourselves in ways that are deeply and fundamentally unjust. We are no longer willing to accept this and building the cultural and political power it will take to win.

Free DC is a fiscally sponsored special project of Community Change, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and Community Change Action, a 501(c)(4) tax-exempt organization.

This organizing began with the 2023 Hands Off DC campaign, a mass response to Congress’s overturn of DC’s Revised Criminal Code Act. Read more about the history of this organizing.

Free DC is a member of Defend DC, a network of movements united to protect DC communities from harmful federal policies.
