Freedom Dreaming 〰️

What does it look like for DC to be free?

The fight for a DC that is free means much more than simply stopping attacks against us. Before we can win a DC that is free, we need to define what this means to us. What would a free DC smell like? Sound like? What will we be able to do with our bodies that right now we cannot? What resources will we have that don’t currently exist?

This summer, Free DC is setting out to define our Freedom Dreams and Freedom Demands through a community visioning series. Liberation movements throughout history have used processes like these to shift collective understanding of what is possible, and define our dignity on our own terms.

We want you to join us this summer to share your Freedom Dreams and inform our Freedom Demands. We will compile the ideas we hear during these sessions into guiding documents for the next three years of our work. Here’s how you can be part of it.

Be part of it

Contribute to this project in any of the following ways.

1. Attend a Freedom Dreaming session

In these participatory workshops, we’ll explore how our day-to-day lives would be different if DC had full political power and define what we want to be different in a future where we have the full rights, resources, and power we deserve.

2. Share your Freedom Dreams online

Prefer to dream in writing? Download our Freedom Dreaming worksheet and send it to team@freedcproject.org. We’ll incorporate your comments into the report we’ll produce at the end of this process.

3. Contribute to our Freedom Dreams quilt

Our liberation is something we are able to touch, feel, smell, and hear. To make this real, this process will include creating a Freedom Dreams quilt and you’re invited to contribute.

Quilt squares should be 8” square and should feature your vision for a DC that is free. Feel free to embroider, draw, emboss, bedazzle, or use any other fiber arts practices in creating your square. You are welcome to create squares together with people from your school, congregation, friend circle, or other folks you know who support a Free DC. Quilt squares will be assembled on a rolling basis starting in August. To contribute your square(s), bring them to any upcoming Ward Team meeting.
