Pressure is intensifying on Governor Gretchen Whitmer as she continues to have Michigan National Guard soldiers deployed in DC where they are supporting Donald Trump’s ongoing of the capital.

On July 9, the DC Council sent a unanimous letter to Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan as well as Governor Albert Bryan of the U.S. Virgin Islands calling on them to withdraw their National Guard soldiers from DC.

On July 7, a coalition of national organizations led by the Brennan Center for Justice sent a letter to Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan urging her to recall the Michigan National Guard from DC.

All National Guard members wear a patch on their left sleeve indicating their home state and unit. We’ve put together a handy guide for identifying the states assisting Trump with his occupation of DC.

On June 8 and June 9, we hosted a training on Election Protection. Election Protection is especially critical for the June 2026 DC Primary Election, where voters will elect a new mayor and new Delegate to the U.S. House under military occupation and increasingly hostile federal presence.
