Multiple law enforcement agencies part of President Trump’s “DC Safe and Beautiful Task Force” have now shot at people, killed people, or created conditions that resulted in the death of a person in custody — with three fatal incidents occurring in the last four days alone. “The Task Force needs to be disbanded.”

Attempts to dismantle DC's local governing power are part of the Trump’s administration’s systematic attacks on American communities and democracy.

A coalition of more than 20 national organizations — and growing — is formally opposing these and all attacks against DC.

MPD should not be assisting federal agents with their attacks on DC residents. We are calling on Councilmember Pinto to hold an urgent hearing on this matter.

On October 29, 2025, Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau, Chair of the Committee on Public Works & Operations, held a public roundtable on incidents that involve D.C. government coordination with federal entities or joint enforcement activity that may violate D.C. human rights laws. Free DC provided testimony at this roundtable.

On October 18, almost 7 million people across the U.S. rallied against Trump’s regime of cruelty and harm. More than a hundred thousand joined the movement in DC, and the Free DC community was a proud part of it.

DC needs elected leaders who will fight federal attacks, not assist them. In recognition of this, Free DC will run a formal candidate endorsements process for DC’s 2026 campaign cycle.

On September 30, leaders from Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Chicago, Memphis, and Portland held a joint virtual news conference to call for an end to the dangerous, unnecessary, and illegal military occupation in their cities.

WASHINGTON DC — This afternoon Donald Trump issued an Executive Order promoting the death penalty in DC.

In response, Free DC issued the following statement:

On September 26, Free DC and community leaders from TN, MS, LA, OH, and WV demanded troop withdrawal as the Trump Administration and Republican governors continue to extend unnecessary, wasteful National Guard deployment in the nation's capital.

This week the House will vote on four bills attacking DC and nine more are in the works. We call on every Democrat in Congress to reject every single one.

One important thing we can do in this moment is to make our demand for a free DC visible everywhere.

Every night at 7 PM, we call on all DC residents to stop what you are doing, go outside, and bang pots and pans for five minutes. We call on everyone to do this every night for as long as the National Guard, ICE, federal forces and this occupation are in place.

On September 6, more than 10,000 people came together in DC to demand an immediate end to Trump’s occupation of the District.
