On Thursday, December 4, Free DC mobilized members of the public to testify before the DC Council’s Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety about the harms of the federal occupation on public safety. Multiple law enforcement agencies part of President Trump’s “DC Safe and Beautiful Task Force” have now shot at people, killed people, or created conditions that resulted in the death of a person in custody — with three fatal incidents occurring in the last four days alone. “The Task Force needs to be disbanded.”

Attempts to dismantle DC's local governing power are part of the Trump’s administration’s systematic attacks on American communities and democracy.

A coalition of more than 20 national organizations — and growing — is formally opposing these and all attacks against DC.

On October 29, 2025, Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau, Chair of the Committee on Public Works & Operations, held a public roundtable on incidents that involve D.C. government coordination with federal entities or joint enforcement activity that may violate D.C. human rights laws. Free DC provided testimony at this roundtable.

On October 18, almost 7 million people across the U.S. rallied against Trump’s regime of cruelty and harm. More than a hundred thousand joined the movement in DC, and the Free DC community was a proud part of it.

DC needs elected leaders who will fight federal attacks, not assist them. In recognition of this, Free DC will run a formal candidate endorsements process for DC’s 2026 campaign cycle.
