On July 22, 2026, DC City Councilmembers unanimously signed and sent letters to Governors to withdraw their National Guard troops from Washington, DC.
On July 9, the DC Council sent a unanimous letter to Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan as well as Governor Albert Bryan of the U.S. Virgin Islands calling on them to withdraw their National Guard soldiers from DC.
DC Council unanimously voted to override the Mayor’s veto, effectively passing the Full Accountability in Arrest Reporting (FAAR) Act. This bill would require basic transparency around the actions of federal agents in DC.

On Thursday, December 4, Free DC mobilized members of the public to testify before the DC Council’s Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety about the harms of the federal occupation on public safety. This testimony was part of Free DC’s ongoing efforts to compel Councilmember Brooke Pinto to hold a hearing on the Metropolitan Police Department’s cooperation with federal forces.
