Introducing our Elections Committee members
Next year, DC will elect new leaders to a number of key offices, and these leaders need to be powerful champions of DC's right to govern ourselves.
To achieve that, Free DC plans to issue endorsements in several of next year's races. Earlier this fall we opened nominations for an Elections Committee to make this process transparent, participatory, and inclusive.
Today we are proud to introduce the members of Free DC's inaugural Elections Committee. They are:
Robert Barton, a co-founder and the Executive Director of More Than Our Crimes, which advocates for DC residents who are incarcerated or recently released.
Shayna Lonoaea, a member of Free DC's Ward 7 Team who has more than a decade of experience organizing on issues of LGBTQ rights, prison reform, and reproductive justice.
Mónica Martínez López, ANC Commissioner of 5B05 and a vocal advocate for DC's 2022 Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act.
Dante O'Hara, former organizing director for the Claudia Jones School for Political Education and now one of the lead organizers of DC's Boycott Target campaign.
Emily Siegel, a DC native, a leader within Free DC's Ward 5 Team, and a longtime dedicated organizer with DC for Palestine.
Sam Trumbull, a leader from our Congress Working Group who helps organize Free DC's presence on Capitol Hill.
Jamila White, ANC Commissioner of 8A05 and Chair of the 8A commission. Jamila will serve as the Chair of this Committee.
More than 70 people were nominated for this Committee and we were floored by the breadth of experience and care for DC in the submissions. Thank you to everyone who made nominations.
Together this group will develop Free DC's process for considering endorsements, including opportunities for input and voting from community members like you. Look for more details about this early in the new year.
Be part of our endorsement process
Voting in our endorsements will be open to everyone who has completed our Campaign Orientation and is a resident of DC. Be part of it by attending one of our upcoming Campaign Orientation sessions.
