National organizations join the fight to remove National Guard from DC
On July 7, the Brennan Center and more than two dozen other organizations sent a letter to Governor Whitmer urging her to recall the Michigan National Guard members she sent to Washington, DC.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer is now the only democratic governor of a state who has Guard deployed to DC. Democratic Wes Moore of Maryland, Governors Tim Walz of Minnesota, Andy Beshear of Kentucky, and Josh Stein of North Carolina have all directed their National Guard troops to leave DC. Trusted sources who are tracking the Guard’s deployments expect troops from each of these states to be gone by the end of the week. For some states, this is more than a month ahead of schedule.
As the Brennan Center’s letter says, “There is nothing normal about the way President Trump has used National Guard forces in the nation’s capital or other cities across the country, and no reason to trust his administration to use your Guard forces appropriately or even lawfully.”
Thousands of people have now written letters to these governors. DC residents are filming the Guard, allies in the states are agitating their leaders, and together we are making it clear that DC wants the Guard gone.
