Home Rule Walking Tour

  • Shaw Neighborhood Washington, District of Columbia, 20001 United States (map)

During the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, Walter Fauntroy and Marion Barry helped lead a local movement to demand DC’s right to self determination.

This massive organizing effort took tenacity, dedication, and strategic response from thousands of people and eventually secured the political power DC communities enjoy today.

Join us for a walk through the history of this organizing with a “Home Rule Walking Tour” on Sunday, October 25. This guided tour led by a DC history professor and Free DC’s Popular Education Working Group will take you through several locations that were key landmarks in the struggle for DC’s self-governance.

This tour will begin in the Shaw-U St. neighborhood and end approximately 1.3 miles away near Gallery Place-Chinatown with multiple stops along the way. Because space is limited, location details will be shared upon registration. The route for this tour is accessible for wheelchairs and other assistive devices with flat sidewalks, curb cuts, and zero steps. ASL interpretation is available upon request. Children are welcome with grownup companions. Register for the event using the form below.
