Where We Stand
During significant change and uncertainty for our city, many of us are asking the same question: What can we do?
In response the recent federalization of the MPD and the ongoing, urgent needs of our unhoused neighbors, Capitol Hill UMC is proud to partner with Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid to host "Where We Stand." This is not just a meeting; it’s vital community gathering to move from concern to collective commitment. We are coming together to process what is happening, understand our role, and find tangible ways to build a safer, more compassionate Washington, D.C. for everyone.
We’ll create a space for both clarity and opportunity. The evening will include:
An Expert Panel Discussion: Hear directly from a panel of frontline leaders from local mutual aid, advocacy leaders, and direct service providers. They will offer context on the current situation and insight into the most effective ways to help.
A Community Q&A: This is a space for your voice. A dedicated time for open dialogue will allow you to ask questions, share concerns, and contribute to the conversation as we chart a path forward together.
A Pledge to Action: This is where we move from talk to tangible commitment. You will have the opportunity to connect directly with our partner organizations at information tables, learn about different roles, and find the right fit for you to get involved in a meaningful way.

Young & United: A DC Youth Assembly
Calling all young people! Join young people from all over the District to come up with a youth response to Trump’s attack on our home and create a list of demands for how you want to see our local city leaders supporting young people.

DC demands federal forces OUT NOW - Rally & Press Conference
Every day for nearly two weeks straight, Trump and his administration have steadily escalated their occupation of Washington DC.
These federal agents are violently profiling, harassing, and arresting Black and Brown DC community members. They are armed, sometimes unidentified, and moving in gangs through the District confronting people who are simply at home, driving to work, or doing routine daily activities.
The occupying federal forces are an ongoing and increasing danger to DC residents. Today DC community leaders will call for their immediate withdrawal.
If you are in the DC region, we invite you to join us today at 3 PM to make our demand powerful and clear. These federal forces are a severe and increasing danger to our communities and we want them to leave immediately.
If you are an ally across the country, you need to pressure your Representative and Senators to actively work to stop what is happening in DC right now. Send a letter or make calls starting now.
Trump won't stop unless we actively stop him. Join us today at 3 PM at 14th & U St. NW. Additional steps to come.

Chief Smith, listen to the DC Attorney General
On Thursday evening, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi ordered DC’s mayor and police department to accept Terry Cole, the head of the Drug Enforcement Agency, as the District’s new “emergency police commissioner” and give him full control of the Metropolitan Police Department during the federal takeover.
Within hours, DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb sent Chief Smith a formal letter with the opinion that “the Bondi Order is unlawful, and you are not legally obligated to follow it.” Now, we need Chief Smith to listen to Attorney General Schwalb.
We call on all DC residents to join us on Friday August 15 from 12-2 PM outside MPD headquarters to add a personal message to the DC Attorney General’s letter about why Chief Smith should protect DC communities and refuse this unlawful order.

DC Bike Party - August
DC Bike Party is a leaderless configuration of bike and city life enthusiasts that organizes monthly rides around Washington, DC. In August, DC Bike Party is highlighting Free DC Project. If you’re looking to get some exercise and learn about getting involved with Free DC in the same night, this is the event for you!
This ride will be about 6 miles long and should last about 75 minutes. Riders will meet at the Dupont Circle fountain, and end at Lamont Plaza, with plenty of spots to hang out and grab a drink or bite along Mt. Pleasant Street. Stay tuned for local bars and restaurants that DC Bike Party is supporting on this route!

Youth Safety Strategy Meeting w/ Free DC and Police Free Schools
As DC faces up to 45 days of federal occupation, we know it’s going to be up to all of us to help make sure DC’s young people in particular stay safe in the face of even harsher overpolicing.
DC parents, teachers, school staff, and youth advocates are invited to this conversation and strategy session about community strategies for safety in DC in the next 45 days.
Register to join this Zoom event on Wednesday, August 13 at 4:30 PM.
