DC College Students to Walk Out on September 9 to Protest Federal Occupation

WASHINGTON, DC — On Tuesday, September 9, students from four major Washington, DC, college campuses – Georgetown University, Howard University, George Washington University, and American University – will walk out to protest President Trump’s military occupation of their city. 

Media are encouraged to RSVP to media@freedcproject.org or press@sunrisemovement.org and include which campus they plan to attend so any necessary arrangements can be made. Georgetown, followed by American University, are expected to be the most visual and active locations. 

WHAT: Student walkouts to protest the federal occupation of DC

WHEN: Tuesday, September 9, 2025

  • 10 a.m. - Georgetown University

  • 11 a.m. - Howard University

  • 1 p.m. - George Washington University

  • 2 p.m. - American University

WHERE: Four universities across DC: 

  • Georgetown University: Red Square (just outside the Edward B. Bunn SJ Intercultural Center) 

  • Howard University: The Yard (near Howard Pl NW and 6th St NW)

  • George Washington University: Kogan Plaza (2121 H St NW)

  • American University: Eric Friedheim Quadrangle (The Quad, adjacent to Bender Library and the Mary Graydon Student Center)

WHO: Organized by Free DC, Sunrise Movement, and student leaders across the city

WHY: Students are returning to school and being met with an unprecedented display of federal overreach. The timing of this walkout is important: On September 10th, Donald Trump’s 30-day authorization under Section 740 of the Home Rule Act expires.
