Free DC statement ahead of House Oversight markup on DC, as Trump’s control of MPD set to expire

Washington DC — The U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is expected to hold a markup session later this morning on 14 bills which attempt to interfere in local DC policy in a variety of ways.

The markup will take place as armed soldiers remain on DC’s streets, as ICE and other federal agents are snatching people throughout DC neighborhoods, and on the day when Trump’s control over MPD is due to expire.

Keya Chatterjee, Executive Director of Free DC, issued the following response:

“A party that is breaking the law left and right shouldn’t be telling DC how to do anything.

“This is a lawless administration and people in DC can see that better than anyone. They are violating our Constitutional rights, stealing from the American people, and illegally deploying the military on domestic soil. Any committee tasked with ‘Oversight and Government Reform’ that is ignoring this is a farce.

“DC communities celebrate the end of Trump’s control over MPD. Now we need the National Guard sent home, and we need ICE and all federal agents out of our communities. Every day that those conditions are not met is a day that DC communities are in increased danger.

“These 14 bills would result in real material harm to DC communities but Republicans don’t have enough support to pass them alone. We call on every single Democrat in both chambers to reject these bills out of hand. DC residents will have no problem showing up at the offices and events of people who vote against us.”
