Justice for DC’s students
DC's school communities deserve better than police harassment, family separation, and armed occupation.
Last night we heard stories from students, teachers, and parents about how the last year of occupation has affected them. Yeselyn, a rising senior, shared the daily contradictions of working towards a bright future while fearing how their life might be turned upside down at any moment. Laura Fuchs, president of the Washington Teachers' Union shared what this year has been like for teachers. And Alex, a parent, shared the consequences of being unjustly detained for two months, how hard it was to explain to his kids why he couldn't come home, and how devastating it was to lose their house because of the financial distress detention causes.
DC's children and young people deserve a future where they are free. That is a huge part of why we are in this fight and it was on full display last night as we reclaimed space where ICE arrests took place last year and centered our community instead.
