Oppose H.R. 9720, the “D.C. Taxing Authority Review Act”
In March last year, Congress attempted to blow a $1.1 billion hole in DC's budget. Our local leaders were the ones who stepped up to clean up the mess. Then in February, Congress tried to do it again when they attempted to block efforts to keep our local tax code independent from drastic federal changes. Once again, they failed.
Now, Congress is coming after DC’s finances for a third time. On July 16, Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) introduced the "D.C. Taxing Authority Review Act" (H.R. 9720). This bill would would permanently deny DC the ability to make changes to our tax code without explicit Congressional approval. It is a direct attack on DC's ability to self-govern and a form of intentional sabotage.
Manufacturing a fiscal crisis is one of the fastest ways Congress could seize control of DC. This is the third time in the last 18 months Congress has attempted to destabilize DC's finances — because we know Trump wants control of DC as part of his grotesque attempts to stay in power forever.
We oppose H.R. 9720 and we’re calling on Congress to do the same. Members of the House Oversight Committee need to hear from us that DC doesn’t want this bill. Call members of the House Oversight Committee and tell them to stay out of DC's budget again.
