Our safety is connected: Solidarity with movements against state violence and toward liberation

Diversity is our strength in DC. People with every type of lived experience and identity are part of our communities. This makes the lives of everyone here richer and more abundant.

Because of this, our fight for dignity for the people of DC is fundamentally connected to many movements for justice and liberation. We are DC residents and we are also Black, queer, parents, immigrants, disabled, and many other intersecting identities which cannot be separated.

With this in mind, Free DC affirms our unwavering solidarity with our allied movements:

  • We are in solidarity with the immigrant justice movement and the recognition that no human being is illegal. We reaffirm DC’s commitment to sanctuary.

  • We are in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, and the recognition that our current system of policing and incarceration causes generational harm to Black and brown families. We reaffirm our commitment that DC residents should have the power over our local police.

  • We are in solidarity with our trans, lesbian, gay, bi, and queer siblings. DC has a higher percentage of LGBTQ+ residents than any state, and we celebrate this fact and continue to fight for the rights and dignity of our LGBTQ+ loved ones.

  • We are in solidarity with the disability justice movement and the recognition that individuals with disabilities belong in our communities and all our movements.

  • We are in solidarity with our unhoused neighbors. We recognize that the solution to homelessness is housing, not sweeps and not criminalization.

  • We are in solidarity with all workers who deserve fair treatment, fair wages, and the right to bargain collectively without interference or coercion. We are in solidarity with union members across all industries in our region as well as federal workers, current and former.

  • We are in solidarity with people who can become pregnant and their right to affordable and accessible health care, including abortion. We recognize that restricting access to abortion threatens the lives and livelihoods of all people who can become pregnant as well as their families.

  • We are in opposition to all hate crimes and hate speech, as well as discrimination against any person because of their race or religion.

  • We are in solidarity with communities affected by climate disaster and all people who have lost loved ones to wildfire, flood, and superstorms. Without action, this will eventually include all of us.

  • We are in solidarity with people around the world fighting to live free from state violence, including the people of Palestine, Congo, Sudan, and many others not named.

  • And we are in solidarity with our young people who deserve quality public education, safety from gun violence, and a livable climate without the escalating threat of climate-related disaster.

In keeping with this solidarity, Free DC has zero tolerance for xenophobia, racism, sexism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, islamophobia, antisemitism, zionism, or other hate speech or discrimination in our spaces.

As part of our commitment to this, Free DC has introduced Constituency Groups to our organizing model. These dedicated safe spaces are a place for people with shared identity to connect, support one another, and build together. Constituency Groups are open to individuals who have completed our Campaign Orientation.
Attend an upcoming Campaign Orientation to become part of our work.
