Remembering Julian Bailey: One Year of Occupation

Today is the first of 11 days that DC residents will share our stories of what one year of occupation has looked like for us, and all the ways we have come together against it.

We gathered this evening in memory of Julian Bailey, and to demand Trump's occupation of DC come to an end.

In February, U.S. Marshals shot and killed Julian Bailey in the Mayfair neighborhood of Ward 7. Julian was a father, a son, and a beloved community member. To this day there has been no explanation of why these federal agents responded to a local 911 call or why they used deadly force.

Yesterday, news brokethat U.S. Marshals shot Julian six times in the back.

"I had to remember, did it hit him like this? Did it hurt him like this? What was he thinking? Did he think about me? Did he think about the girls?" his wife Trenise said. Yesterday would have been their five-year wedding anniversary.

We heard the sorrow and grief of Julian's widow, Trenice. We heard from Julian's lawyer about the roadblocks to justice, we heard from long-time organizers in the Movement for Black Lives, and more.

Regimes like this one want us to forget their injustices. They are counting on us to distracted and move on. Publicly remembering is a key way we can work to make sure they are held accountable for their crimes.

There's one other way we can all help. DC government has street camera footage from the day Julian was killed, but they have so far refused to release it to Julian's family. Sign the petition calling on Mayor Bowser to give Julian's family the camera footage from the day of his death.
