Pass the DC Local Funds Act

Since March 17, House Speaker Mike Johnson has delayed a bill with broad bipartisan support that would restore DC’s power to spend our local money.

Now, after more than two months of of inaction and $1.1 billion of local DC money still frozen, DC is on the brink of drastic cuts to programs and services that serve our communities and members of Congress alike. Here are the most recent updates about this campaign.

On May 28, Mayor Muriel Bowser released a supplemental budget for FY25 that found a number of ways to reduce the impact of Congress’s interference in our local funds. The supplemental proposed a number of strategies to reduce the $1.1 billion in cuts to only $347 million in cuts.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson has made it clear he has no interest in helping DC, even on a problem his chamber created that has an easy solution. As of June 30, the DC Local Funds Act remains held at the Speaker’s Desk. The House has found time to pass three other bills that interfere with DC during this time. DC’s fiscal year ends September 30.
