DC’s December 2025 tax bill becomes official law
For the second year running, Congress has tried to blow a multi-million dollar hole in DC's local budget and destabilize the District's finances. We know that these attempts are part of Trump's agenda of destruction, and they pose a fundamental threat to Home Rule.
The most recent way Congress has tried to do this is by attempting to overturn a bill that DC Council passed in December. The DC bill decoupled our local taxes from the drastic changes made at the federal level last year. Many states have taken similar action.
At midnight last night, that DC bill became official law! This is great news for children and families in DC as well as everyone who pays taxes here. It means DC government will have the stable, predictable revenue they need this year for the programs that keep our communities healthy, safe, and whole.
Congress tried their hardest to prevent this law from taking effect. After moving at lightning speed over the last 10 days, the Senate voted to overturn the bill this afternoon — but they were too late: the law went into effect at midnight last night.
To the thousands of DC residents and allies who called, emailed, and visited members of Congress over the last 10 days to voice your opposition, thank you! Progress like this is only possible when we fight for what's ours.
We also thank the DC Council for working to get legislation like this through the unnecessarily burdensome process Congress imposes on DC, and for passing balanced, on-time budgets for the last 29 years in a row.
